Number Town ---- Procedure
Before the class arrives put the cards randomly on the students' desks. After they come in and find their cards, tell them the following: Today you are going to be a fraction that lives in Fractionville. The ID card on your desk has your name on it (for example, 3/4) and on the flip side is your picture ID of the costume you are currently wearing.

Each of you belongs to a group. There are five groups in the room. Your task is to find your other group members and sit down with them. When you are together, the head of your group should stand up.

Note: Who is the head of your group you ask? Why it's your fraction in lowest terms, of course!

Here's me, the group leader with a couple of my group members.



The goal of the activity is for students to discover that their group mates are all equivalent fractions. That is, their shaded areas are equal.
